ℹ️ Tax-exempt properties are not included in taxable transactions because they are, by their own definition, not subject to sales or local sales tax.

1️⃣ Add States and Regions

πŸ‘†

Clicking the Edit States button opens a list of states and Canadian provinces and territories.

βœ… Select each state, province, and territory:

  • in which your business provides products and services

  • that are subject to state or local sales tax.

ℹ️ For example, if you provide products and services in Illinois and Indiana, and both of those states require your customers to pay state or local sales tax for those products and services, select both Illinois and Indiana.

Each selected state, province, and territory will be listed across the top column of the taxable transactions table.

2️⃣ Assign Tax and Property Categories

For each state, province, and territory appearing in the top column of the taxable transaction table:

βœ… Select the tax categories and property categories that are subject to state or local sales tax.

Assign Tax and Property Categories: Examples

β€” Example 1

Assume that your business provides septic pumping, grease trap cleaning, and portable rentals in Illinois and Indiana and that:

  • Illinois charges state or local sales tax for portable rentals on all property categories, except for municipal properties.

  • Indiana charges state or local sales tax for all products and services on commercial properties.

In this case:

  • for Illinois:

    • βœ… select the rental tax category for the residential, commercial, and other property categories.

  • for Indiana:

    • βœ… select all tax categories for the commercial property categories.

β€” Example 2

Assume that your business provides septic pumping, grease trap cleaning, and portable rentals in Wisconsin and that Wisconsin charges state or local sales tax for:

  • portable rentals that exceed 30 days, on all property categories, except for municipal properties;

  • septic pumping and grease trap cleaning on commercial properties categories; and

  • products (goods) on all property categories, except for municipal properties.

In this case, you would:

  • βœ… select the rental tax category for the residential, commercial, and other property categories;

  • βœ… select the septic services tax category for the commercial property category; and

  • βœ… select the products tax category for the residential, commercial, and other property categories.

3️⃣ Assign Tax and Property Categories to Your Products and Services

Once you've finalized your taxable transactions settings, you'll assign tax categories to your products and services that are subject to state or local sales tax in βš™οΈSettings -> Section 8: Products and Services.
